Kerala has two monsoon seasons — the southwest monsoon from June to September and a lighter northeast monsoon in October–November — and while the landscape is lush and green year-round, travelling during heavy rains can be uncomfortable and some routes become difficult. The best time to visit is November through February, when the weather is dry and relatively cool, temperatures hover in the low-to-mid 30s, and the birdlife on Vembanad Lake is at its most varied. March to May is hot and humid but manageable. Avoid the height of the June–August southwest monsoon for anything involving outdoor activity.
