Kovalam's position at the southern tip of Kerala makes it a good base for exploring the surrounding coast and the state capital. All of the following are reachable in under two hours.
Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) is 16 km north and easily done as a half-day trip. The Napier Museum and Natural History Museum complex is worth a morning — the Napier Museum building itself, designed by Robert Chisholm in 1880, is one of the finest examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture in South India. The Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the fort area is one of the wealthiest temples in the world (its vaults hold an estimated ₹1 trillion in gold and jewels); non-Hindus cannot enter the inner sanctum but the outer courtyard and the gopuram are impressive. The Chalai bazaar nearby is a good traditional Kerala market.
Varkala is 50 km north by road, with dramatic red laterite cliffs above a long beach and a notably more relaxed tourist scene than Kovalam. Worth the trip if you want to compare beaches and consider whether to move your base. The Janardana Swami temple at the cliff edge is a functioning pilgrimage site and worth seeing alongside the beach.
Poovar Island is about 28 km south, where the Neyyar River meets the sea and a network of backwater channels creates a quiet estuary landscape. Boat trips through the backwaters can be arranged here. The beach at Poovar is undeveloped compared to Kovalam and backed by casuarina forest.
Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Dam is around 35 km east, in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The sanctuary holds tigers, elephants, leopards, and sambar deer. Day visits involve a boat ride on the reservoir and guided walks; the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwanthari Ashram at the sanctuary edge offers yoga retreats.
Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari) is 90 km south — technically a long day trip — where India's southernmost point marks the confluence of the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean. Sunrise and sunset from the cape are celebrated events; the sunrise in particular draws enormous crowds for the sight of the sun rising out of the sea. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial sits on an island offshore.
