Swimming and Water Sports

Swimming at Kovalam is straightforward during the November to February season. The beaches are patrolled by lifeguards who fly colour-coded flags: green for safe, yellow for caution, and red for dangerous conditions. The red flag system is taken seriously — the undertow on this coast, particularly on Lighthouse Beach outside the protected southern bay, can be powerful and has drowned swimmers who ignored warnings. Stay within the flagged zones and obey the lifeguards.

Snorkelling is possible from the rocky outcrops at either end of Hawah Beach at high tide. The visibility is not exceptional by tropical standards — Kerala's coast is not clear tropical water — but there is enough marine life around the rocks to make it worthwhile. Masks and fins can be rented from beach stalls for minimal cost.

Boat trips are offered from the beach — one-hour rides in the traditional catamarans or fibre-glass motorboats for sunset viewing or fishing trips. Negotiate the price before boarding. Surfing is not a significant activity here — the waves are generally too small and inconsistent — though the annual Kovalam Surfing Festival, held in November, attracts participants and generates temporary board rental activity.
