Muchundi Mosque

13th-century Shafi'i mosque with a royal inscription

The Muchundi Mosque (Muccunti Palli) in Kuttichira is even older than the more famous Mishkal nearby — a 13th-century timber building of two storeys with a steeply pitched tile roof, carved wooden pillars and broad pinjara screens at the upper windows.

A vatteluttu-script stone inscription set into the wall records the gift of land to the mosque by the Zamorin king, a rare written acknowledgement of Hindu royal patronage of an early Indian mosque. Visit outside Friday prayer times and dress conservatively.
