Niyamasabha Mandiram

The Niyamasabha Mandiram is the Kerala Legislative Assembly building, a handsome colonial structure in the Palayam neighbourhood that reflects the administrative gravity of this government capital. It was built in the 1930s and is an interesting example of the architectural compromise between British colonial function and local ornamental tradition.

The building is not open for general visits, but the exterior is worth seeing, particularly the main facade with its columns and formal gateway. The surrounding government quarter of Palayam gives a good sense of how the city was planned as an administrative capital under Travancore rule and then developed under the Indian state government. The nearby Government Secretariat complex is on the same walking circuit.
