Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is widely regarded as one of the best zoological parks in India, and it earns that reputation. Established in 1857 — making it one of the oldest zoos in Asia — it occupies a substantial area of forested land within the museum compound, allowing many animals considerably more space than is common in Indian zoos. The landscaping follows the natural terrain, and the plantings have matured to the point where enclosures feel embedded in actual habitat.

The collection includes Indian elephants, tigers, leopards, lions, sloth bears, Nilgiri langurs, and a notable collection of Indian reptiles. The white tiger exhibit draws crowds. The zoo is best visited on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds, and early morning is cooler and more pleasant for the animals. Allow two to three hours; the grounds are large enough that rushing means missing things.
