Tholpetty is the northern section of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, set on the Karnataka border and contiguous with the larger Nagarhole and Bandipur reserves. It is excellent for wildlife: elephant herds are common sightings, and the sanctuary also has gaur (Indian bison), spotted deer, wild boar, and a healthy leopard population. Tiger sightings are rare but possible.
Jeep safaris run in the early morning and in the late afternoon — the only times when wildlife activity is at its peak. Book the day before at the forest department office in Tholpetty; safaris fill up fast during the high season. The 4km route loops through varied habitat including riverine forest and open grassland. The sanctuary is closed on Tuesdays and closes to visitors during the monsoon months (roughly June-September).
