Mahamaya Temple

Active Hindu temple in Purani Basti, one of Raipur's important pilgrimage sites

The Mahamaya Temple in Purani Basti is dedicated to the goddess Mahamaya, a form of Durga who is considered a protective deity of the region. The temple is one of the most actively visited religious sites in Raipur and sits among the lanes of the old town close to the Dudhadhari Math complex. The architecture is relatively modest but the setting is evocative — the surrounding streets have old havelis, small shops selling puja supplies, and the general texture of a neighbourhood that has been doing the same things for a long time. Visit in the early morning for the daily aarti.

A story
Mahamaya — 'the great illusion' — is one of the names of the goddess Durga in her most powerful aspect. The Raipur temple draws pilgrims from across Chhattisgarh, particularly during Navratri when the streets around Purani Basti fill with devotees and the temple stays open through the night. Outside festival season it is a quiet neighbourhood temple with a genuine atmosphere that the more famous sites in the old town sometimes lack.
