Things to Do

Raipur rewards modest expectations. The Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum is the city's genuine highlight — a compact but carefully curated collection of tribal art, bronze sculptures, and archaeological finds from Chhattisgarh's ancient temple sites. Spending an hour here before heading out to the region's wilder corners sets the scene well. The old town district of Purani Basti clusters several temples close together: the Dudhadhari Math temple complex has fine carved stone work on its exterior, and the Mahamaya Temple nearby is an active pilgrimage site that draws devotees from across the state.

Vivekananda Sarovar, the large urban lake near the old town, contains a replica of the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial from Kanyakumari, built on an island in the middle of the water. It's a pleasant place to walk in the evenings when locals come out in numbers. Telibandha Lake to the east is smaller and less visited, but also good for a quiet evening stroll. Ghadi Chowk, the old clock tower in the commercial heart of the city, marks the junction where the new and old parts of Raipur meet.

The most interesting thing about Raipur, honestly, is what it unlocks. The state of Chhattisgarh has some of the least-touristed forests and temples in India. Raipur is the practical base for all of it — well served by trains and flights, with onward buses to Bastar, Jagdalpur, and Sirpur departing regularly.
