The Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum holds the best introduction to Chhattisgarh's history and material culture you'll find in the city. The collection spans tribal artefacts, bronze sculptures, terracotta figures, coins, and archaeological finds from the ancient sites scattered across the state — including pieces from Sirpur and Malhar. The tribal art section is particularly good, with objects from the Gond, Baiga, and Maria communities of Bastar. The museum is housed in a colonial-era building in the central part of Raipur, and the grounds are pleasant to walk through. Allow an hour; the labelling is uneven but the objects speak for themselves.

A story
The museum is named after Mahant Ghasidas, a nineteenth-century saint from the Satnami community who led a remarkable social reform movement among the lower castes of what was then Central Provinces. His descendants ran the princely state of Raipur, and the collection they assembled — now a state museum — includes some fine Chhattisgarhi metalwork and tribal objects that would be celebrated if they were displayed anywhere less obscure.
