Purani Basti

The old town quarter, with temples, havelis, and Raipur's historic core

Purani Basti is the old quarter of Raipur, wedged into the southern part of the city centre. The lanes here are older and narrower than the rest of the city, and the buildings — a mix of carved wooden havelis, merchant houses, and modest temples — give a sense of what Raipur looked like before its rapid modern growth. The Dudhadhari Math and Mahamaya Temple both sit within the neighbourhood, making Purani Basti the natural area for a temple-and-heritage walk. Early morning is the best time: the light is good, the streets are relatively quiet, and the daily rituals at the temples are in full swing. Give yourself an hour to wander without a specific destination.

A story
Purani Basti — literally 'old settlement' — is the neighbourhood that predates British Raipur. The area was the heart of the town during the Maratha and early colonial periods, and it still carries the architectural traces of those eras in its cramped lanes, carved wooden havelis, and cluster of temples. Most visitors pass through only to see the Dudhadhari Math or Mahamaya Temple, but the neighbourhood itself is worth the detour.
