Meherabad

Meherabad is the ashram and dargah (tomb-shrine) of Merwan Sheriar Irani, known to his followers as Meher Baba, about 10 km south of Ahmednagar. The site is maintained by an international community of followers and draws pilgrims from around the world throughout the year.

The dargah itself — Meher Baba's tomb — sits on a low hill above the original ashram buildings. The setting is peaceful and the community welcoming to visitors of all backgrounds, whether devotees or merely curious travellers. The hilltop tomb offers views across the Deccan plateau, and the silence of the place has a quality that is hard to describe without sounding mystical. The archives at Meherabad contain extensive materials documenting Meher Baba's travels, the thousands of letters written to him, and the physical means (alphabetical charts) by which he communicated for nearly half a century.

A story
Meher Baba observed a vow of silence from 1925 until his death in 1969 — 44 years during which he communicated entirely through an alphabet board and hand gestures. He spent years travelling through India seeking out the lowest and most marginalised people, believing that spiritual truth was found among them. His international following grew despite — or perhaps because of — his silence, eventually extending across America, Europe, and Australia.
