Kalsubai Peak Trek

Kalsubai, at 1,646 metres, is the highest point in Maharashtra and the most popular serious trek in the region. The trailhead starts from the village of Bari, about 15 kilometres north of Bhandardhara. The ascent takes three to four hours at a steady pace, with iron ladders and chains assisting the steeper sections near the top.

On clear days the summit offers a panorama extending over the Western Ghats as far as the coast. The best conditions are in October and November, after the monsoon has cleared but before winter haze arrives. Start early to avoid the midday sun and the crowds that build on weekends. A pre-dawn start allows you to reach the top for sunrise, which is exceptional.

A story
Kalsubai is considered the 'Everest of Maharashtra' — a title that flatters it somewhat, given the peak is 1,646 metres above sea level. A small temple at the summit dedicated to the goddess Kalsubai draws pilgrims as well as trekkers. Local legend holds that a woman named Kalsu meditated here until she achieved divine status, and the mountain took her name.
