Ratangad Fort

Ratangad Fort sits on a ridge at around 1,300 metres in the Sahyadri range, offering panoramic views over Arthur Lake, the Bhandardhara valley, and the surrounding peaks. The fort dates from the medieval period and was later strengthened under Chhatrapati Shivaji's Maratha empire in the 17th century.

The trek up takes about three hours from Ratanwadi village, passing through forest and rock faces. At the summit the ruins include a carved cave temple, cisterns cut into the rock, and the distinctive Ganesh Darwaja gateway. The Amruteshwar Temple in Ratanwadi village at the base, an 11th-century Hemadpanthi structure with intricate stone carvings, is worth visiting before or after the climb.

A story
The fort's most unusual feature is the Ganesh Darwaja — a gateway carved from the living rock with a circular opening just wide enough for a person to squeeze through sideways. This design was deliberate: it forced anyone entering to slow to a crawl, making a surprise attack through the gate impossible. The Maratha builders were meticulous about such details.
