Dwarkamai is the ruined mosque where Sai Baba made his home from approximately 1858 until his death in 1918. He arrived to find it in disrepair and restored it himself, tending a sacred fire called the dhuni that he kept burning throughout his life. The dhuni still burns today, tended by the temple trust, and the ashes — called Udi — are distributed to pilgrims as a blessing.
The mosque is a modest structure, the opposite of grand — a small open space with a grinding stone Sai Baba used, the original dhuni, and a portrait photograph of him as an old man. Despite its simplicity, or perhaps because of it, Dwarkamai has an atmosphere of concentrated devotion unlike anything in the larger and more ornate Samadhi Mandir next door. It is the most intimate part of the Shirdi pilgrimage circuit.
