The Samadhi Mandir is the heart of Shirdi — a marble-floored temple complex built around the tomb of Sai Baba, who died here in 1918. The samadhi (tomb) itself is a white marble shrine draped in garlands and surrounded by devotees at all hours. The scale of the pilgrimage is staggering: on an average day, 25,000 to 50,000 people pass through; on major festival days, that figure can exceed 100,000.
The complex has grown significantly since Sai Baba's death and now includes the original Dwarkamai mosque where he lived and prayed, the Chavadi building where he slept on alternate nights, several subsidiary shrines, gardens, and a large free dharmashala (pilgrim shelter). Queue systems manage the flow of devotees during peak periods. Photography inside the sanctum is restricted; outside in the complex it is generally permitted. Plan for a one-to-two hour visit at minimum, more if you arrive on a Thursday or festival day.
