Taptapani Hot Springs

Sulphurous hot springs in the Eastern Ghats forest, 50km inland

Taptapani is a set of natural hot springs in the forested hills of the Eastern Ghats, about 50 kilometres inland from Chatrapur. The water emerges at around 60°C from a rock fissure and flows into bathing pools that have been in use for centuries. A small Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) resort sits alongside, with a warm-water swimming pool fed by the springs.

The drive from Chatrapur passes through sal and mixed forest with views over the Ganjam hills, and is itself worthwhile. Taptapani has an important local religious significance — the springs are associated with the goddess Kandhen Budhi — and a small shrine sits above the main pool. The area is cooler than the coast and noticeably green, a good contrast after the flat coastal plain.
