Chatrapur (also spelled Chhatrapur) is the headquarters of Ganjam District in southern Odisha, a small administrative town on the Chennai-Howrah main line. It sits on NH-5 between Berhampur and Bhubaneswar, making it easy to reach by both rail and road. The town itself is quiet and unassuming, but it serves as a base for exploring the southern Odisha coast and the hilly hinterland of Ganjam.
The Thakurani Yatra festival, celebrated once every two years, is the big event here — a week-long procession honouring the goddess Thakurani that draws enormous crowds from across the district. The festival features decorated chariots, traditional music, and a palpable sense of community devotion. If your timing coincides, it is worth stopping for.
The Ganjam coast nearby has long stretches of relatively untouched beach, and Tampara Lake at the mouth of the Rushikulya River is good for birdwatching. The Taptapani hot springs, about 50 km inland in the Eastern Ghats, are a popular excursion set in cool forest. The Lakhari Valley with its sal forests and tribal villages gives a sense of rural Odisha that few travellers see. Chatrapur has basic facilities but nothing elaborate — Berhampur, about 20 km south, is the nearest city of any size for better dining and services.
