The barrage across the Mahanadi at Naraj is a long, low dam that controls the distribution of the river's flow into the delta's irrigation system. At the point where the river divides, with the Kathajodi branch heading southeast toward Cuttack and the main channel continuing to the Bay of Bengal, the engineering and the landscape combine to create a scene that is both industrial and beautiful.
Evenings are the best time to visit. Local families gather on the banks, vendors sell sugarcane juice and roasted peanuts, and the fading light turns the water orange and pink. When the barrage gates are open, the sound and force of the water are remarkable. During the monsoon from July to September, the river can rise dramatically and the sight of a swollen Mahanadi pouring through the spillways is worth making the trip specifically to see.
