Naraj Ghat

The ghat at Naraj is a flight of stone steps descending to the Mahanadi at the point where the river begins its split. It is used for ritual bathing and puja, particularly on auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. The ghats are most active in the early morning, when devotees arrive before sunrise to bathe in the confluence waters, and the combination of mist on the river, temple bells, and boat traffic makes for an atmospheric scene.

A small riverside temple sits near the ghat and is active throughout the day. The ghat steps themselves are worn smooth by centuries of use and offer a good vantage point for watching river life — fishing boats, bathers, washing — that continues largely unchanged from how it must have looked for generations.
