Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant Lake

An unlikely sight: the cooling reservoir of the (now-decommissioned) Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Power Station has become, almost by accident, a birding spot of regional importance. In winter the lake fills with migrating waterfowl — northern pintails, gadwalls, common pochards, occasional flamingoes — drawn from across central Asia.

You will need permission from the plant authorities to enter the inner perimeter, but the outer bunds are accessible and the view across the water is striking, especially at dawn when the chimneys rise out of the mist. Bring binoculars.
