The maze of indigo-washed houses spilling down the slopes below Mehrangarh is what gives Jodhpur its nickname. The blue was originally the preserve of Brahmin households -- said to keep the houses cool and to ward off insects -- but spread across the wider neighbourhood over time. The best way to see it is to wander on foot, getting lost in the lanes around Navchokiya. Look back at the fort from any small terrace and you have one of India's great views.
