The Do-drul Chorten is one of the most significant stupas in Sikkim, a gleaming white dome in the heart of Gangtok topped by a golden spire. Built in 1945, it stands in the grounds of the Nyingma monastery complex and is surrounded by 108 prayer wheels — a sacred number in Tibetan Buddhism — that devotees spin as they walk the circumambulation path around the stupa.
The stupa is an active religious site. In the early morning and evening you will find monks and laypeople making their circumambulations, spinning the wheels and muttering mantras. The complex includes a large monastery where monks can usually be observed at prayer. This is one of the most accessible Buddhist sites in Gangtok, close to the town centre and easy to reach on foot.
