Vattakottai Fort is a compact coastal fort northeast of Kanyakumari, built under the Travancore kingdom as part of its southern defensive line. The walls are low and walkable rather than overwhelming, but the position is excellent: sea on one side, green fields on the other, and the Western Ghats rising in the distance.
It makes a good short trip from town when the temple and memorial crowds are heavy. The pleasure is in the geometry of the ramparts and the open coastal air, not in museum displays, so bring water and time the visit for gentler light.
