Agartala

Tripura's riverplain capital, mixing royal Manikya palaces, temples, markets, and Bangladesh-border bustle.

Agartala is the capital of Tripura, set on the Haora River close to the Bangladesh border. It is one of northeastern India's more accessible capitals, with flights, trains, and road links, and it makes the practical base for exploring Tripura's palaces, temples, wildlife sanctuaries, and archaeological sites.

The city's strongest sights come from the Manikya royal period. Ujjayanta Palace, now home to the Tripura State Museum, gives Agartala its most memorable skyline, while temples and smaller civic landmarks sit around the old royal and administrative centre.

Agartala is not polished, and the monsoon can make the low-lying city feel heavy and waterlogged. But it has real borderland character: Bengali streets, Tripuri food, rickshaws, markets, and the sense that Bangladesh is just over the edge of town.
