Surkanda Devi Temple

Hilltop Shakti shrine reached by a short trek

Surkanda Devi sits at 2,750 metres above sea level on a forested hill above Kanatal, reached by a steep but well-paved 1.5 kilometre path from Kaddukhal village on the Chamba-Mussoorie road. The temple itself is small and modest, but the views — on a clear day the entire snow-bound Garhwal Himalaya across the northern horizon — are exceptional.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour up and a similar time back down. The path is shaded by oak and rhododendron, beautiful in March and April when the rhododendrons flower. A small ropeway from Kaddukhal has been added for those who prefer not to walk.

A story
Surkanda Devi is one of the 51 Shakti Pithas of the Hindu world — sites where, in mythology, parts of the goddess Sati's body fell when Shiva carried her dismembered corpse across the heavens. Tradition holds that her head landed here, which is why the temple is also called 'Sirkhanda', the 'head shrine'.
