Quiet Uttarakhand hill station on the Chamba-Mussoorie road, with Garhwal Himalayan views and deodar forests.
Kanatal is a small hill station in Uttarakhand, perched at about 2,600 metres on the Chamba–Mussoorie highway, roughly 300 km (six to seven hours by road) from Delhi. It is a quiet place — barely a village — with views of the snow-covered Garhwal Himalayas and dense forests of deodar and oak.
The area is popular as a weekend escape from Delhi, especially in winter when snowfall between December and February transforms the landscape. In warmer months, the forests and meadows are good for walking, and the nearby Surkanda Devi temple offers a short trek with panoramic mountain views. The Tehri Dam and its reservoir are within day-trip distance.
Kanatal has a handful of resorts and camps but remains low-key compared to Mussoorie or Shimla. That is much of its appeal.

Day Trips
Mussoorie, the much larger old British hill station 38 kilometres west, is the obvious half-day trip — the Mall, the cable car up to Gun Hill, and Kempty Falls. Dhanaulti, halfway between Mussoorie and Kanatal, is quieter and has the small Eco Park and a Shiva temple in a high-altitude meadow. The pilgrimage town of Tehri-Garhwal and the Tehri Dam viewpoint round out a sensible loop back.

Getting There
Kanatal is roughly 300 kilometres from Delhi by road, taking six to eight hours depending on Delhi traffic and the Mussoorie bypass. The standard route goes via Haridwar, Rishikesh and Narendra Nagar, then climbs along the Chamba-Mussoorie road. Shared taxis run from Mussoorie (38 km, about 1.5 hours) and Dehradun (75 km, two to three hours).
The nearest railway station is Dehradun, with overnight trains from Delhi and Lucknow. Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport has daily flights from Delhi and Mumbai. From either, a taxi up to Kanatal takes between two and three hours.

When to Go
Kanatal works in three quite different seasons. April to June is the classic summer hill-station escape from Delhi heat — daytime temperatures around 20 to 25 degrees, cool nights, green forests. The monsoon (July to September) brings heavy rain and frequent landslides on the Chamba-Mussoorie road; avoid it unless you have a flexible itinerary.
December to February is the most distinctive season: it snows, often heavily, and the resorts fill with families coming up from the plains for their first sight of snow. April and October are arguably the best months, with clear skies and quiet trails.
