Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple stands on the northern shore of Naini Lake, at the Mallital end of Mall Road. It is one of 51 Shakti Peethas in Hindu mythology — the sacred spots where parts of the goddess Sati's body fell to earth — and the spot where, according to legend, her eyes landed. The goddess is worshipped here as Naina Devi (the goddess of eyes), and pilgrims come seeking cures for eye conditions and general blessings.

The temple itself is a brightly decorated structure with a banyan tree in the courtyard that is said to be ancient. The ghats in front of the temple extend to the lake, and on auspicious mornings worshippers bathe here before entering. The temple is busiest early in the morning and during festivals; at other times it is a calm spot on the otherwise busy lakeside road.

A story
The original temple was destroyed in the great landslide of 18 September 1880, which killed 151 people and buried much of the northern lakeshore in a few minutes. The current structure was rebuilt in the decades after the disaster. The annual Nanda Devi Mela, held during Nandashtami in September, draws pilgrims from across Kumaon and Garhwal, and temporarily transforms the lakeside into a fairground.
