Snow View Point

Snow View Point sits atop the Sher-ka-Danda ridge at 2,270 metres, reached either by the Nainital cable car (ropeway) from Mallital or by a 2-kilometre path on foot. It is the most popular viewpoint in Nainital, with telescopes on the terrace trained toward the Himalayan peaks visible on clear days — Nanda Devi, Trisul, and the Panchachuli range among them.

The cable car runs from roughly 10am to 5pm and is the preferred way up for most visitors. The walk is more rewarding on the way back down. The terrace at the top has stalls selling chai and snacks and the usual complement of tourists in rented Pahadi clothes posing for photographs. Come early in the morning for the clearest views; by midday haze usually obscures the higher peaks. The zoo (G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo) is a short walk away on the same ridge.

A story
On a clear winter morning, the Snow View cable car delivers you to a terrace at 2,270 metres where the entire central Himalayan chain is visible across the ridges — Nanda Devi, Trisul, Panchachuli, and dozens of unnamed peaks. Most visitors see only cloud, which is why the locals call good-visibility days "Himalaya days" and treat them as minor events worth announcing.
