Kamleshwar Temple

The Kamleshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and occupies a prominent position on the river bank in Srinagar Garhwal. The temple's religious significance derives from its association with the Ramayana: according to local tradition, Ram came here to atone for the killing of Ravana, a Brahmin by lineage, and worshipped Shiva to free himself from the resulting sin. The setting beside the Alaknanda, with the forested hills rising on the opposite bank, adds to the atmosphere.

The temple is active year-round and receives its heaviest footfall during the Char Dham pilgrimage season from May to October. Morning and evening aarti are held daily. The temple compound also contains smaller shrines to other deities and is surrounded by a courtyard where pilgrims rest before or after their journey.

A story
Kamleshwar is one of Srinagar Garhwal's principal Shiva temples, believed to be the place where Lord Rama performed penance after slaying Ravana. The temple sits near the banks of the Alaknanda and is a significant pilgrimage stop on the Char Dham route — many pilgrims coming down from Badrinath make a point of stopping here before continuing south.
