Srinagar (Pauri Garhwal) is a town in the Garhwal division of Uttarakhand, on the banks of the Alaknanda River at around 600 metres altitude. It should not be confused with Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir — this is a smaller, quieter Himalayan foothill town serving as headquarters of Pauri Garhwal district and home to Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.
The town lies on the main pilgrim route to Badrinath and the Char Dham shrines. The most significant religious site nearby is the Dhari Devi Temple, 19 km from town on the Srinagar-Badrinath highway, perched on a rock above the Alaknanda gorge. According to local legend the idol was found in the river after a flood and instructed by divine voice to be installed under the open sky — it remains there to this day, and thousands of pilgrims en route to Badrinath stop to pay their respects. Photography of the idol is prohibited. The Kamleshwar Temple, Kamsmardani Temple, and Raghunath Temple are among the religious sites within the town itself.
Srinagar Garhwal is primarily a transit and service town. The Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University gives it a modest intellectual character, and the Alaknanda River offers river scenery, ghats, and white-water rafting access to the Pauri Garhwal hills.
