Gorakhpur is very well connected by train, as befits the headquarters of North Eastern Railway. Trains run to Varanasi (roughly 4 hours), Lucknow (4–5 hours), Delhi (12–15 hours), and Kolkata (around 16 hours). The railway station also handles trains to the Nepal border at Sunauli (Nautanwa), making Gorakhpur the standard transit point for overland crossings into Nepal.
Gorakhpur Airport (GOP) serves flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and a handful of other Indian cities. It is a small airport but has expanded in recent years.
Buses and shared jeeps run frequently to Sunauli (about 2.5 hours) and to Kushinagar (roughly 50 km to the east). State buses connect to Varanasi, Lucknow, and Allahabad.
