The Shaheed Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park — almost always called simply Gorakhpur Zoo — is a mid-sized zoo on the southern edge of the city. The collection includes tigers, leopards, deer, various bird species, and reptiles, spread across a reasonably spacious site that has been gradually upgraded over the years.
The zoo is popular with local families and is at its liveliest on Sundays and public holidays. For foreign visitors, it is more of a practical option — if you have children in tow and need to fill a few hours — than a destination in its own right. The greenery and relative quiet make it a pleasant contrast to the city's traffic. Entry fees are minimal.
