A large urban park built around an ancient lake — the Suraj Kund, or Sun Tank — that has been a gathering place in Meerut for centuries. The tank itself is of historic significance, associated with the early medieval period of the city's history, though extensive development of the surrounding park in recent decades has softened the historical character of the setting. The park is now one of the main green spaces and recreational areas in the city.
On weekends and holidays the park fills with families, and in the early mornings joggers and walkers use the paths around the lake. Rowboats can be hired on the water. The surrounding gardens include lawns, flowering trees, and an amusement park section. For travellers, the park is mainly useful as a place to decompress after a morning in the old city; the green space and relative quiet are welcome in a city that generates a great deal of both traffic and noise.
