Getting Around

The narrow lanes of the old city restrict transport to a few options. Walking is the only way to navigate the ghat area and the maze of alleys around Vishwanath Temple.

Cycle Rickshaw — Easily available everywhere and cheap. Best for short hops within the city.

Auto-Rickshaw — Three-wheelers run on the main roads throughout the day. Economical and comfortable for longer trips. Agree on the fare before you get in.

Boats — Small rowing boats are the classic way to travel between ghats and to cross the river. Hire one at any ghat for a sunrise ride — this is one of Varanasi's essential experiences.

Taxi — Available for trips to the outskirts (Sarnath, the airport) but restricted to main roads. The by-lanes are far too narrow.

City Bus — Serves the outskirts and is used mainly by locals. Crowded and not practical for visitors.
