Scindia Ghat

Scindia Ghat is famous for one image: the half-submerged Shiva temple at the water's edge, sunk into the river. The temple was built by the Scindias (rulers of Gwalior) in the 19th century, and it is said it was so heavy it sank into the earth on the day of its consecration. The building now leans at an angle and is partially underwater — accessible only to priests who wade in during low water. It is one of Varanasi's most photographed images and most striking from a boat.

The ghat itself is less busy than Dashashwamedh, making it a better place to sit quietly and watch the river. A washing ghat adjoins it where clothes are beaten against stone — the rhythmic sound carries across the water. Scindia Ghat is immediately adjacent to Manikarnika Ghat to the south.
