Mahakal Temple and Observatory Hill

Observatory Hill is the highest point in Darjeeling town, a short but steep climb from Chowrasta. The summit is occupied by the Mahakal Temple, a Hindu-Buddhist hybrid shrine dedicated to Shiva and considered one of the more sacred sites in the hills. Prayer flags, bells, and incense give the approach a distinctly Tibetan feeling despite the Hindu dedication, reflecting the mixed religious heritage of the town.

The hill was the original site of the Buddhist monastery that gave Darjeeling its name. When the British arrived in the 1840s and cleared the hilltop for administrative and recreational use, the monastery was relocated and the Hindu temple established. The summit gives a 360-degree view of the town and, on clear mornings, the full panorama of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Come at dawn, before the clouds build.

A story
Observatory Hill was originally the site of the founding Buddhist monastery of Darjeeling — Dorje Ling, the 'place of the thunderbolt,' from which the town's name derives. The British displaced the monastery in the 1850s for a sanatorium, and the Mahakal Temple now occupies the summit.
