West Bengal is reached most easily through Kolkata, which has the state's principal international airport.
By air: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata handles flights from most major Asian hubs as well as connections across India. IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Vistara all fly domestically to Kolkata from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore. International carriers include Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, and Cathay Pacific, usually via their hubs. Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri serves the northern part of the state and is the gateway to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim; it receives domestic flights from Kolkata, Delhi, and Bangalore.
By train: West Bengal has excellent rail connections. Kolkata is served by two main termini — Howrah and Sealdah — with trains running to and from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and most major cities. The Rajdhani Express (Howrah–Delhi) takes around 17 hours. From the northeast, most trains arrive via New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near Siliguri, where you change for narrow-gauge connections to Darjeeling or road transport onward.
By road: The main highway corridor from Delhi follows NH2 (the old Grand Trunk Road) through Bihar into West Bengal, passing through Durgapur and Bardhaman before reaching Kolkata. Bus services connect Kolkata with cities across eastern India and with Dhaka in Bangladesh. The Petrapole–Benapole border crossing is the main overland route between India and Bangladesh.
By sea: A passenger ferry service operates between Kolkata and the Andaman Islands periodically, though schedules are irregular.
