Dr. Graham's Homes

Dr. Graham's Homes is a boarding school on the slopes of Deolo Hill, established in 1900 by the Scottish missionary Dr. John Anderson Graham. The campus occupies a large area of hillside and contains a substantial collection of colonial-era buildings including a Gothic chapel, staff cottages, playing fields, and orchards. The grounds are generally open to visitors during the day, and the chapel is one of the more atmospheric buildings in Kalimpong.

The school continues to operate as a residential school, and the campus has the slightly time-stopped quality of many hill-station institutions — large trees, well-kept lawns, and the smell of damp stone. From the upper parts of the campus, the views towards the Teesta valley are good. It is best combined with a walk up to Deolo Hill, which rises directly above.

A story
Dr. John Anderson Graham founded the school in 1900 as a home for the children of Scottish tea planters who had mixed-race families — a category that left these children in a social no-man's-land during the British period. He is buried on the campus. The school he founded became one of the leading boarding schools in northeast India and still functions today, educating over 1,400 students.
