Shankarpur Fishing Harbour

One of the largest mechanised fishing harbours in West Bengal

A working fishing harbour at the eastern edge of the village, with a long concrete jetty and a fleet of mechanised trawlers — Shankarpur is one of the largest landing centres in West Bengal. The morning auction (roughly 5–7 am) is the main event: silver pomfret, hilsa in season, prawns, crabs, mud lobster, and the heavy bhetki destined for Kolkata restaurants.

Visitors are tolerated rather than welcomed; stay out of the way and don't photograph the auction floor without asking. The smaller wooden boats moor on the river side and go out for one-day trips; the steel trawlers stay out for ten days or more. Closed during the monsoon fishing ban (mid-April to mid-June).

A story
Shankarpur was a quiet village until the state government built the mechanised harbour in the late 1980s as a relief valve for overcrowded Digha. It is now one of the two main landing centres on the Bengal coast, with several hundred trawlers registered and a daily catch worth crores of rupees in season.
