Shankarpur Beach

Quiet stretch of grey-gold sand backed by casuarina groves

The beach runs more or less unbroken from Tajpur in the east to the headland west of the village — about 5 km of pale sand backed by planted casuarina (jhau) trees that give shade and break the wind. The sea is shallow and the slope gentle, with no strong currents under most conditions, so swimming is genuinely safe.

There is no commercial development on the beach itself: a handful of small huts selling tea and coconuts, the occasional pony-cart for hire, and that is about it. The best time of day is early morning, before the haze burns off and the fishing boats come in. Avoid the few weeks around the full moons in March and September when high tides can swallow the strand entirely.
