Pura Batu Bolong is the sea temple that anchors the south end of Canggu's beach strip. The name means temple of the holed rock — batu (rock) and bolong (hole) — and refers to the natural arch in the volcanic formation the temple is built on. At high tide, the sea fills the hollow below.
The temple is small and architecturally modest compared to Bali's major temples, but it has genuine atmosphere: black stone walls, worn ceremonial gates, and the constant sound of waves. Visitors are welcome outside of ceremonies but should be dressed appropriately — a sarong is required and can be borrowed at the entrance. The late afternoon light on the rock and the temple's silhouette against the sunset is one of the better photographs in Canggu.
