Echo Beach is the main surf break in Canggu and one of the most consistent breaks on Bali's southwest coast. The beach faces northwest, which catches the best of the Indian Ocean swells. The wave is a hollow right-hander that works best at mid to high tide; on a good day it peels cleanly over the volcanic rock reef and draws surfers from all the surrounding resorts.
The beach is black volcanic sand, which makes it less glamorous than Bali's white-sand coasts but gives the sunset a particular quality: the sand catches the orange light differently. A row of surf schools and equipment rental shops lines the road behind. The bars and warungs facing the water are the obvious place to spend the afternoon.
