The reason Kuta exists. A wide, flat stretch of pale sand running for around three kilometres from Tuban in the south to Legian in the north, with consistent beach-break waves that roll in from the Indian Ocean and a sunset view that lines up perfectly with the western horizon.
Mornings are calm — surfers in the water, joggers on the sand. By midday the umbrellas come out and the beach fills up with massage ladies, hair-braiders, and drink sellers; politeness and a firm "no, thank you" handle most of them. Late afternoon is the best moment: the heat eases, the surf schools head out, and locals join the tourists for sunset. Swim with care — the rip currents are real, and the lifeguards' red-and-yellow flags are not a suggestion.
