Kuta is one big bazaar. Jalan Legian and the surrounding lanes are wall-to-wall surf brands, T-shirt printers, cheap silver jewellery, sarongs, and bootleg DVDs that nobody quite knows what to do with anymore. Bargaining is expected at the stalls — start at around forty per cent of the asking price — but the surf shops and shopping malls are fixed-price.
For air-conditioning and reliable goods, head to Beachwalk Shopping Center opposite the beach, or Discovery Mall at the southern end. Krisna and Joger sell Bali-themed clothing and souvenirs at fixed, fair prices and are useful for last-day gift runs.
