Crater Rim Trail

Short steep climb from the caldera floor to the outer rim, with views to the ocean

At the northern end of Songan, past the lake-shore temple, a rough trail climbs steeply up the inner crater wall to the outer caldera rim. The climb is short — 30 to 45 minutes — but steep enough to be strenuous. The reward at the top is a complete reversal of perspective: behind you the caldera stretches back with its lake, volcano, and villages; in front of you the land drops away to the coast and the sea, with the volcanoes of Lombok and sometimes Java visible on a clear day.

The trail is unmarked and the path is loose in places — proper footwear is needed and the walk is easier in the dry season (April–October). There are no facilities on the trail. The best time to go is early morning, before the clouds build inland.
