Songan

Lakeside Balinese village inside Batur crater, with caldera trails and fresh lake fish.

Located at the north end of Lake Batur inside Batur crater, the appeal of Songan is its spectacular location. Following the lake shore to the crater wall, you reach a temple; past it, a short but strenuous trail climbs to the crater rim, where the view opens in both directions — the caldera with its lake and volcano behind, and the ocean below with Lombok visible on a clear day.

Songan is a quieter base for Mount Batur than the more touristed Toya Bungkah village further around the lake. The restaurants here serve freshly caught lake fish.

Things to Do

Songan sits at the caldera floor with Lake Batur on one side and the crater wall rising steeply on the other. The main activities here are walking along the lake shore to the crater-wall temple, climbing the short steep trail to the caldera rim for views down to the lake and across to the ocean, and using the village as a launching point for the pre-dawn Mount Batur sunrise hike. The lake provides fresh fish for local restaurants — grilled lake fish is the signature meal of the area.
