Warung Ibu Oka is the most celebrated cheap eat in Ubud — a warung (small Indonesian restaurant) just opposite the palace that has been serving babi guling (Balinese spit-roasted suckling pig) since the 1950s and has been famous since Anthony Bourdain featured it on television. The pig is roasted whole over a wood fire, stuffed with a spice paste of turmeric, ginger, galangal, and fresh herbs, and served in portions with crispy skin, minced pork, blood sausage, lawar, and steamed rice.
Come for lunch — the pork sells out by mid-afternoon, sometimes earlier. The setting is simple and the prices are excellent by any standard. The cooking starts at dawn; by noon the place is full of a mix of local Balinese and visitors who've read the same guidebook recommendation for 20 years. It still deserves it.
