Rumah Merah Lasem

Red-walled heritage house in Lasem's old Chinese-Javanese quarter east of Rembang.

Rumah Merah is one of the most visible stops in Lasem, the old Chinese-Javanese town just east of Rembang. The red-walled compound sits in the Tiongkok Kecil heritage area, where old houses, temples, batik workshops, and narrow streets make Lasem feel different from the surrounding coastal towns.

Use it as a starting point rather than the whole visit. The appeal is the wider neighbourhood: Peranakan architecture, batik culture, and the long history of Chinese settlement on Java's north coast.
