Kalimantan is the Indonesian portion of Borneo, the world's third-largest island, and one of the least visited parts of the archipelago. Getting here takes time and money, but the reward is a place that remains genuinely unspoilt — vast rainforests, slow rivers, and Dayak longhouse villages that few tourists ever reach.
The main gateway for most visitors is Banjamarsin, known for its maze of canals and spectacular floating market. From there the island opens up: Samarinda is the jumping-off point for expeditions up the Mahakam River into Dayak country, while Balikpapan serves as the main air hub. Palangka Raya, the capital of Central Kalimantan, sits between two rivers and offers a quieter base for exploring the interior.
